Donations collections by syndicates

KUALA LUMPUR: Police rescued 16 Malaysian youths who were forced to “beg” for donations after they responded to advertisements promising well-paying jobs.
The youths were kept under constant guard in two places – an apartment and a house – after they finished “work” and were not allowed to make telephone calls. They were given only instant noodles to eat almost daily by the syndicate holding them.
They were rescued after The Star informed Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amer Awal that one of the youths had managed to send an SMS to his family for help.
Within minutes of the tip-off, ACP Amer assembled a team of police officers headed by his district CID chief Deputy Supt Goh Lee Fook to investigate the case.
After placing the premises in Taman Pandan Ria, Ampang, under surveillance for almost five hours, a raid was carried out at 1.45am on Monday and the youths were rescued.

Rounded up: Some of the youths who had been put to work soliciting donations illegally from the public. They were found asleep on double-decker beds and on the floor during the raid.
ACP Amer said police arrested four members of the syndicate, including a woman. All have been remanded to facilitate investigations.
“The youths, mainly from Sabah, Johor, Perak, Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor, had responded to advertisements placed in local vernacular newspapers for the post of marketing executives and front office supervisors with salaries at between RM900 and RM1,000 a month.
“Successful applicants paid between RM150 and RM200 to attend a one-month training programme before they started work. Part of the money was supposed to be for their return air tickets,” he told The Star.
ACP Amer said investigations revealed that the youths were taken to an apartment where they had to listen to a one-hour talk on how to beg or solicit money for charitable organisations before being sent to the streets.
It is learnt that several of the youths were even taught how to stammer to gain sympathy from the public.
The youths were not allowed to communicate with anyone and at any one time, either a supervisor or a senior would monitor their every move.
“The youths collected a total of about RM1,000 a day. We have seized several receipt books and are investigating how much they have collected so far,” said ACP Amer.
He said police were investigating the case under unlawful confinement and forced labour.
“Once we have completed our investigations, we will forward our report to the authorities for further action.”
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said if it was true the boys had been forced to ask for donations and were locked up in the house and apartment, then such an act constituted slavery.
“We want to find out whether any of the boys were reported missing by their families or even kidnapped.”

Course shortened after complaint

20 Nov 2006

KOTA BARU: About 1,000 science and mathematics teachers in the state have been instructed to attend courses to improve their English during the third-term holidays.

However, the teachers, who are members of the National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP), are unhappy with the directive as they claimed their holidays would be affected.

While it supported the move, NUTP president Ismail Nihat said the course should not have been held during the school holidays.

Following the complaint, a decision was made to shorten the course to two weeks.

Who is Sathya Sai Baba?
Sathya Sai Baba is one of the most revered spiritual teachers in the world today. He is quietly transforming the world by reestablishing the eternal values of Truth (Sathya), Right Conduct (Dharma), Peace (Shanti), Love (Prema) and Nonviolence (Ahimsa) in everyday living.
He is also known as Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Sai Baba, Swami, Bhagavan, or simply as Baba to millions of people in the world. His followers come from all faiths and races and meet regularly for devotional singing, to study His teachings, and to engage in service activities in order to practice His message of Love and Peace to unite all mankind.

Sathya Sai Baba was born on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparthi, a remote village in the state of Andhra Pradesh in Southern India. He is the fourth child of a humble and pious couple, who named Him Sathya Narayana Raju. As a child, He demonstrated exceptional qualities of wisdom, compassion, and generosity. When He was seven years old, He composed devotional songs that were sung in religious festivals. At the age of fourteen, He announced that His name was Sathya Sai Baba and proclaimed His mission: to bring about the spiritual regeneration of humanity by demonstrating and teaching the highest principles of Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Nonviolence. With that announcement, He left His childhood home and began His mission.

From an early age, Sathya Sai Baba began demonstrating extraordinary powers. He quickly became known for the miracles that He performed such as materializing objects, especially a holy ash called vibhuti, assisting people in distress, and letting those who came to Him for advice know that He was aware of even the most intimate details of their lives. Yet, He has always maintained that His miracles are to be treated only as His calling cards. They are for the purpose of inspiring and encouraging people to begin their own spiritual journey of personal transformation.

In 1950, His devotees built a temple and residential quarters about a mile away from His birthplace in the village. He named this ashram 'Prashanti Nilayam' (Abode of Peace). Today, this ashram can accommodate and feed many thousands of devotees who come to see and hear Sathya Sai Baba. Under His care and guidance, Puttaparthi has evolved to have high quality schools, an accredited university, a spiritual museum, a well-equipped modern hospital, and a jet airport.
Sathya Sai Baba's followers regard Him as an incarnation of God in human form (Avatar). He is the ideal of goodness: One who manifests all human virtues in their purity and perfection; One who shows power, wisdom and knowledge beyond the comprehension of humans; and One in whom immense powers lie at His will. You are welcome to ask questions about Him, read His books, and attend Center activities.

Teachers to look up to

The news that An Education Ministry effort that is set to take off will place trainees in a controlled environment to be tutored by experts on what it takes to be a teacher. It is true that many teachers are demoralised by their profession. There are many factors contributing to this. For one, the system for promotion is open for abuse and many find themselves shortchanged at the end of the day. Therefore, the responsibility and portfolio of the school administration should be made more transparent. There are headmasters who actually threaten their staff with poor performance record if they do not follow their whims and fancy. These type of behaviours should never be tolerated in a learning institution. Often, the complaints concerning unfair treatment of teachers go unheeded by the upper authorities because their grouses would be eclipsed by that of their superiors who hold the final say on matters - the is also lack of autonomy in classrooms because of many reasons, flagrantly common and poor management of the school administration that consists of senior teachers who were elected to their posts without any experience in managing, overlapping paperwork that comes from different stratas of authorities - interior admin, the nazir, the local education authority, the state education authority and finally directives from the ministry. These directives should be simplified and concerted to make administration in schools more effective and paperless. Then, there are also unmotivated and unprepared teachers for any other reasons, personal or otherwise, and methods that are not adapted to the changing time and attitudes of young people. On a personnal level, teachers, like any other person in the street, are real people and they should never be pressurised to produce miracles on a daily basis. Intake of teachers should be limited to first graders and excellent results because of a simple reason - only the best produces the best. What can one expect of someone if he/she grapples even with his/her own competencies? A look into the current scenario facing the english, maths and science teachers would reveal interesting results of the teachers' competencies in their own field. BE HAPPY AND PERFORM EXCEPTIONALLY !!!
